EMOTIONAL CLEARING FOR PAIN
**I will start off with a disclaimer here, stating that this is in no way evidence based or that there is any scientific proof for this type of work. I am sharing my experience here, my own personal experience and changes I have seen with my clients**
I first read about psychosomatic medicine years ago when I had some clients who had recently heard Howard Stern speaking about Dr Sarno on his show. Dr Sarno practices psychosomatic medicine and had recently put out a book on back pain. It explores the relationship between physical pain and emotional/traumatic/psychological stress. Basically, the body creates pain as a response to these stresses as protection. As a Massage Therapist who has always tried to keep up with the latest scientific/evidence based techniques and studies, I didn’t really think much about it. I never would have thought it would have helped me so much.
DOES THE BODY “STORE” EMOTIONS AND EVENTS?
Honestly, I have no idea. Nobody has discovered any proof that it does. It certainly seems to, though. A lot of people have experienced feeling emotions or recalling events as certain body parts are worked on during a massage. I know I have. Still, I have no idea what exactly what it is I’ve experienced or why it happens. But I know through emotional clearing, seemingly breaking the neurological connections between the physical body and the emotion somehow helps move through it.
MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
A little over seven years ago, I had a baby and she died, full term stillborn. I knew I just wanted to move on and I thought I grieved. But like so many people do, I repressed everything and I just wasn’t aware of it. My body seemed to do me a favor and created pain, depression and anxiety so I wouldn’t feel the stress I was actually feeling. I jumped into work, eventually started Body Balance Massage Therapy and everything seemed as though it was fine. The pain, stress and anxiety I felt I just thought was a normal part of life. Then my dog was diagnosed with cancer, and it was a downward spiral for me. I never was not able to function, but I was sick a whole lot. I cried a whole lot. I stressed about everything, all the time. It was not a good time for me. I realized at that point that I never actually grieved the loss of my baby and now this current situation with my dog was just triggering all those emotions that were buried deep down. My first experience was with an intuitive energy healer. The work I did with her helped me immensely. Then I started working with a colleague of mine, using Manual Muscle Testing and Applied Kinesiology based work to do emotional clearing. These are controversial methods, for sure. But it was working. I was able to work through a lot of things I had repressed. We broke connections between physical pain and my emotional stress. So I could actually grieve and deal with my stress, rather than have my body cover it up with neck pain, illness or whatever else. I am in a much better place today because of all of this.
BUT THERE’S NO PROOF IT WORKS
No there isn’t. But there also isn’t any proof that it doesn’t work. Maybe there could be proof, but science hasn’t been able to get there yet. Remember when everyone thought the Earth was flat and thought that guy who claimed it was actually round was the crazy one? I don’t need everything I do to be evidence and science based. In fact, when it comes to pain, there is so much we don’t know. Even when doctors come up with a diagnosis for pain, it’s an educated guess at best. I have done Energy Healing, I practice and seek out energy based work, I meditate, I even meditate with crystals! I feel better and that is good enough for me.
INTEGRATED MANUAL THERAPY SESSIONS
The work we can do here is a combination of emotional clearing and manual therapy massage work. This is in no way a therapy session or anything like that. We use a combination of Eastern and Western medicine techniques, some Applied Kinesiology/Manual Muscle Testing based work to help break some of these patterns. This work can be especially helpful for daily stress management, not just moving through major traumas or events. Daily management of stress can be extremely beneficial as people are affected by day to day stress so much. It can help people process stress much better, letting the body know that it’s ok so the teeth don’t clench and the shoulders don’t creep up towards the ears. Chronic pain conditions can greatly be helped, if there are emotions or events linked to the pain. My favorite article I’ve read about grief and “moving on” quotes Megan Devine stating, “Some things in life cannot be fixed. They can only be carried.” And I have found that through emotional clearing work, it makes the carrying a whole lot easier.
**Again, I will state that I realize the claims of me being helped are anecdotal and in no way evidence or science based. Anyone who would like more information about one of these sessions, please feel free to contact us!**
